A Living Apothecary
A Field Journal for the Medicines that Live with Us
The greatest gift the plants offer is not simply medicine—it is relationship.
This Living Apothecary Field Guide was created as an invitation to slow down, wander with curiosity, and begin knowing the wild alpine plants that grow around us. Rather than identifying a plant and moving on, these pages encourage you to observe, smell, touch, sketch, reflect, and discover how each plant lives within the greater web of the mountain ecosystem.
Inside you’ll find field journal pages for some of our beloved mountain medicines—including yarrow, arnica, bee balm, angelica, wild rose, fireweed, and goldenrod. Each page offers a bit of folklore, spaces for observation, traditional herbal actions, and room to record the medicines you craft and your own experiences with each plant.
Print the guide, tuck it into your backpack, and bring it with you on your next walk. Sit beside a patch of bee balm humming with pollinators. Notice where arnica chooses to grow. Breathe in the fragrance of wild rose. Watch goldenrod nourish the late-summer bees. Over time, these plants become more than names—they become familiar neighbors.
My hope is that this guide helps you cultivate not only an herbal apothecary, but a living relationship with the mountains, the seasons, and the quiet wisdom growing just beyond your doorstep.
Happy wandering. 🌿
